These are some highlights from the five-week-old photos I did of my friend Kristin's litter of six Australian shepherd puppies. I'm doing a session with them each week for the first eight weeks or so, and posting the highlights here.
This week the pups had their first outdoor experience. This was exciting for them, and a relief for the photographer because of two simple words: available light. Up to now I've needed off-camera flash in order to get high-quality photos of the pups. This week we shot outdoors, and I left my lighting gear at home.
In an homage to Kristin's Irish heritage, which is also reflected in her kennel name (Tara Australian Shepherds), we photographed the pups among the clover (it's actually wood sorrel, but don't tell Kristin) in her back yard.

These are some highlights from the two-week-old photos I did of my friend Kristin's litter of six Australian shepherd puppies. I'm doing a session with them each week for the first eight weeks or so, and posting the highlights here. At two weeks old, their eyes are just starting to open, and their personalities are becoming more defined. As you can see, Tara Reid is one of the more curious pups, poking around and exploring whatever environment he's in (yes, "he").
For this session I wanted to introduce a little more of the human element, so I had Kristin hold each puppy up while I snapped away. The handheld pose made the pups easier to photograph than last week, because it restricts their squirming around by default. The lighting is similar to last week, in that I used a single SB-600, camera-right, through a shoot-through umbrella, triggered with a Yongnuo RF-602. I balanced the light between the foreground and background by backing up the whole light setup to decrease falloff.
